DCU-O-0107 OpenVMS Internals Overview

Course Description

The OpenVMS internal course id intended for the student who requires an extensive understanding of the components, structures, and mechanisms contained in the OpenVMS operating system. It is also an aid for the student who will go on to examine and analyze OpenVMS source code.

Pre-requisites

The student should have the ability to program in an OpenVMS programming language. Ability to read and comprehend programs written in MACRO and BLISS is recommended.

Agenda

Student will learn:

To use the interrelationship of selected OpenVMS components (job controller, ancillary control processes, symbionts), data structures and mechanisms
Describe and differentiate system context and process context
Discuss programming considerations and system management alternatives to such problems as:
Assigning priorities in a multi-process application
Controlling paging and swapping behavior for a process or an entire system
Writing and installing a site-specific system service
Use system-supplied debugging tools and utilities
Describe the data structures and software components involved when a process is created or deleted
Describe how the following interrupt service routines are implemented: AST deliver, scheduling, hardware clock and software timers

The course will offer a discussion period where student can exchange ideas.
